Our guests often ask me: “What is Skiathos like in winter?”
I must say that I only live on Skiathos during the summer period, but I have been there several times out of season.
It is an atypical Greek island compared to others, as it is quite cold and rainy in winter. Even snow can be found a couple of times a year.In that case, it is a real eye-catcher to admire the snow-covered beaches and hills of Skiathos.
This unique microclimate is due to its geographical position: it is, among the Greek islands, the most northerly.
The abundance of rainfall during the winter period and the presence of many aquifers make Skiathos (together with Skopelos) among the greenest islands in Greece.
Those who have been to Skiathos and also to other Greek islands have certainly noticed this peculiarity. So much vegetation, so much forest that reaches down to the beach. It is certainly a unique landscape, especially seeing this vegetation on the sea, which is shaped by the wind.
Noteworthy is the beach of Megalos Aselinos, an enchanting place, but what makes it really special are the trees that surround it. The wind, which blows incessantly, has shaped them over time, giving them unique and bizarre shapes.
Also in the surroundings, it is possible to stop at Kehria beach, which can be reached via a path through a lush forest. Along the way, you can admire streams flowing between the rocks and unique views of the sea.
Skiathos, an island alive in winter too
In winter, Skiathos has about 5,000 inhabitants, mainly concentrated in the area of the old harbour. One might think that the population is mainly composed of elderly people, but this is actually not the case.
In fact, last time I visited the island, in early spring, I noticed many children playing in the streets. Even the bars and restaurants that were open were all quite busy.
In fact, it was the time of Orthodox Easter, a very important holiday for Greeks, who often return home to celebrate with their loved ones.
What could be better than asking the inhabitants themselves, what is Skiathos like in winter?
So, we asked a few questions to those who live on the island all year round; those who were born and raised there.
Kosta, together with his father, runs the tavern-pizzeria “Gravisi”, located in the alleys of the old harbour area. Kosta is also a skipper and founded the company “Privé Boat Rental and Cruises“. He was born and raised on Skiathos and decided to stay and start a family on his island, because he is in love with everything the island has to offer.
In conversation with him, he shared with me that “The quietness, the slow and serene pace and the infinite beauty of nature are the reasons why I appreciate Skiathos even in winter“.
Kosta continues: “Obviously, on a fairly small island, there are not many activities to do during the winter. I really like fishing and the sea on Skiathos simply adds to my passion. Its beautiful waters, the variety of fish and shellfish, the scenery seen from the boat, the silence when you are offshore and the sea rocking you. These are all aspects that make me happy to be here and that I appreciate day after day“.
It should be added that “during winter and spring, the municipality organises several musical, cultural and sporting events. Thus, the inhabitants of Skiathos have the opportunity to get together and share moments of leisure and increase their sense of community even more.
There are several events especially during the Christmas period“.
Next goal is to spend a Christmas on Skiathos 🙂 🙂
Because Skiathos is not only beaches and sea; it is an island that enchants you with its bursting nature, its silences, its breathtaking views, its hidden churches and so much more.
I thank Kosta for his time and kindness.
